"Draw us closer to Thee every moment of our life, until in us be reflected Thy grace, Thy glory, Thy wisdom, Thy joy, and Thy peace. -- from the prayer Saum, by Hazrat Inayat Khan A Sufi musican and mystic from India named Hazrat Inayat Khan brought Sufism to the West in 1910, and from then until his death in 1927, created a body of teaching and of teachers which led to a group of Sufi orders devoted to the unity of all religions, the honoring of all of the saints and masters, and the seeking for the divine within. One of Inayat Khan’s students was Samuel Lewis of San Francisco, who later became known as “Sufi Sam” to the world and as Murshid Sam to his young disciples in the late 1960's. We are a part of that stream, and singing this music is our shared spiritual practice. Murshid Sam taught that God was not a concept; rather, God was in experiences, and as with any other spiritual practice, music allows us to have an experience of God. For us, it comes most obviously in the few seconds at the end of a song, as the music resonates through the air and our beings, our minds are momentarily still, and our hearts open. Luckily, this can happen for the listener, too, and we hope it will happen for you. The broad inclusiveness of our Sufi teachings encourages us to draw from many spiritual and musical traditions. Here are the twenty tracks, drawn from several years of live and studio recordings, on this CD: |
